As we begin the New Year with newfound vigour, it is essential that we pay attention to cultivating a clear and relaxed mind. Decluttering is one approach to accomplish this. A clean house helps to alleviate stress, anxiety and depression. Follow renowned organisation expert, Marie Kondo's KonMari approach as it is simple and effective.

1. COMMIT YOURSELF

Marie believes the first rule of tidying is to decide to clean up sincerely, and to commit to putting in the time and effort required. You'll have the energy and inspiration to tidy all of your possessions in one go if you approach your tidying with a can-do attitude.

2. ENVISION YOUR IDEAL LIFESTYLE

The next step is to consider the type of home and lifestyle you desire. If you can draw, draw it. Describe it in a notebook if you prefer. You can also use magazine photos as reference. Imagine your ideal lifestyle and why you wish to tidy up. The tidying process is a turning moment, so think about the lifestyle you want.

3. KEEP WHAT MAKES YOU HAPPY

Interestingly, the KonMari method employs a one-of-a-kind selection criterion: picking what makes you happy! As opposed to selecting which items should go in the trash first, you go straight into picking the pieces that bring you joy.

4. TIDY BY CATEGORY

Starting with clothes and moving on to books, papers, komono (miscellaneous things), and lastly emotive items, the approach encourages tidying by category rather than by location. Remember, keep only the items that speak to your heart, and bin anything that no longer puts a smile on your face.
