Tropicana Corporation has appointed Tan Sri Rastam Mohd Isa as its new chairman, effective last Friday.
He takes over from Datuk Rohana Mahmood, the previous independent non-executive chairman of Tropicana.
The group's executive vice-chairman and founder, Tan Sri Danny Tan, said in a statement Rastam will further contribute to the growth of the group.
Rastam spent more than 36 years as a diplomat in the service of the government.
He began his career in the Malaysian Administrative and Diplomatic Service (PTD) as an officer attached to the Foreign Affairs Ministry in 1974. He served in various capacities at the ministry and Malaysian diplomatic missions abroad, including as high commissioner of Malaysia to Pakistan, ambassador to Bosnia Herzegovina and to Indonesia and permanent representative of Malaysia to the United Nations in New York.
In 2006, he was appointed Foreign Affairs Ministry secretary-general before retiring from the civil service in 2010.
He currently serves as chief executive of the think-tank, Institute of Strategic & International Studies (ISIS) Malaysia.
Last year, Tropicana achieved a record high, new sales of RM2.17 billion. The group also recorded a group revenue of RM1,475.5 million and profit before tax of RM503.6 million for the full financial year ended Dec 31.
To date, the group has close to 808ha of landbank in strategic, key growth regions in Malaysia, which has an estimated gross development value of over RM70 billion.
